What Is IQ?

IQ (Intelligence Quotient) is a standardized score used to measure cognitive abilities such as reasoning, pattern recognition, and problem-solving, compared to the general population. The average IQ score is 100.

What an IQ test typically measures

Logical reasoning
– understanding rules and relationships

Pattern recognition – identifying visual or numerical patterns

Problem-solving ability – finding solutions efficiently

Spatial reasoning – working with shapes and visual information

How Scoring Works

IQ scores are calculated using a standardized scoring system designed to compare individual performance with that of the general population.

The average IQ score is set at 100, with a standard deviation of 15. This means that approximately two-thirds of the population — score between 85 and 115.

Scores are distributed along a bell curve, where fewer people score at the very low or very high ends, and most cluster around the average.

Your result may also include a percentile ranking, which shows the percentage of people in the population who scored below your result. For example, a percentile of 75 means you scored higher than 75% of test-takers.
